World Press Photo 2012

For more than 55 years now, the World Press Photo Exhibition is the opportunity for everyone to admire and best understand via pictures, in a one and only venue, the most important events and the issues at stake in the previous year. Gathered in 10 categories (sport, nature and world news among others), the 2011 edition comprises works of 54 talented photographers whose pictures were selected by a jury of experts among more than the 108 000 submitted photographs.

Each picture and all details concerning the shots are briefly commented. This exhibition runs through more than 100 cities during the year, thus attracting millions of visitors throughout the world. It aims at a wide public, and includes an important educational section. Teachers from all grades are invited to bring their students to discover a remarkable springboard into the world, as well as a fantastic and often marking source of inspiration.

The World Press Photo activities are built on the following principles: political independence, respect for press photographers' work and reject of censorship.

ANTHROPOGRAPHIA

ANTHROPOGRAPHIA : ἄνθρωπος γράφω in Greek literally means "human being" – 'writing' thus 'anthropo' – 'graphia'.

These terms reveal Anthropographia's mission: to write human stories with the help of photography. AnthropoGraphia's objective is to offer new spaces for photo reporting. Spaces that give the opportunity to promote human rights and fight against social injustices.

AnthropoGraphia is witness to multiple realities throughout the world thanks to quality photographies, chosen for the stories they tell and their strength and aesthetics.

Founded in Montréal in 2008, AnthropoGraphia has been presented in several cities on the international level (New York, Geneva, etc.). It gathers a selection of the best photo-documentaries of the world most prestigious agencies.

ROUGE²

Initiated by Québec’s students, and then taken up by the general public, the sweeping social movement that came to a head in spring 2012 mobilized several hundred thousand activists who, in order to make their voices heard, took to the streets of Montréal and elsewhere in huge numbers.

Described by some as the largest protest by Québec’s citizens since the Quiet Revolution, this movement was conducted in a manner that was festive, inclusive, at times violent, but always ongoing, a real debate on the future of education, making it impossible for anyone in Quebec to remain indifferent.

New Practices and the Current State of Photojournalism
Host : Dennis Trudeau

Ed Kashi, an American reporter-photographer, has been active in the field for 30 years. He is a member of the VII Photo Agency, founded September 9, 2001, two days before the September 11 attacks by al-Qaeda in New York. Ed Kashi’s complex imagery has been recognized for the compelling way in which it illustrates the human condition. His work is characterized by a sensitive eye and an intimate relationship to his subjects. He has received many international awards, including three from World Press Photo. He was jury chair for the World Press Photo 2011 MULTIMEDIA Contest. “I take on challenges that touch me, related to the human condition and the world, and I sincerely believe that photographs have the power to change people’s states of mind.” - Ed Kashi - www.edkashi.com

His lecture will deal with issues in photojournalism: the focus of the profession and how it defines itself in a world where the written press is dying and where, through the use of social media, more and more citizens are taking on the role of journalist. Ed Kashi will stress the importance of using photography as a tool for advocacy and the development of work over the long term. Ed will also discuss the photographer’s role in new practices in audio-visual production.

THE ARAB SPRING SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF SEVERAL PHOTOGRAPHERS
Host : Dennis Trudeau

James Estrin, an American, is photographer emeritus with the New York Times and the founding editor of the NY Times Lens blog. He started at The Times in 1987. He was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for the series “How Race is Lived in America.” In 2004, he was the first journalist to photograph an assisted suicide in Oregon, an event which he documented through articles, photographs and an audio slide show. Internationally, he has covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict several times and chronicled the journey of Mexican immigrants who shuttle between their lives in the United States and Mexico. http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/author/jamesestrin. “Jim is the consummate contemporary journalist, which makes him invaluable.” - Michele McNally, director of photography at The New York Times.

James Estrin will discuss the Arab Spring from his viewpoint as editor of The New York Times Lens Blog. This revolution was amply covered by a great number of photographers who came from around the world to capture this historic moment.

This year, the 55th edition of World Press Photo is profoundly marked by these national uprisings. With a deliberately selected slide show, James Estrin will comment on this grassroots protest through images and will discuss basic issues, such as the role of the photo editor who, each day, recreates this revolution in iconic images.

THE DOCUMENTARY PORTRAIT: A PROJECT ON THE SURVIVORS OF THE JAPANESE TSUNAMI
Host : Dennis Trudeau

A member of the Corbis Outline agency, French photographer Denis Rouvre is known for his portraits of celebrities from the worlds of music, cinema and sports (including wrestlers and rugby players), preferring to photograph them with their consent. A specialist of the genre, his photographs regularly appear in the national and international press, as well as on album covers. In 2011, he covered the Cannes Festival for Première magazine, suggesting to the movie stars that they photograph themselves, in a light box. Lamb, his portrait of Senegalese wrestlers, earned him 2nd prize in the Sports Stories category, at World Press 2010. He has been to Japan twice, to the Tohoku region, which was ravaged by the March 11, 2011 tsunami. After exploring every square inch of that desolate land, he was determined to photograph the survivors, whose lives had been shattered, and collect their eye witness accounts in order to give them a voice. His riveting portrait of Toku Konno, which reveals the scars of unbearable devastation, won 3rd prize at World Press Photo 2012, in the Portraits category. www.rouvre.com

Denis Rouvre will speak about his work as a portraitist, as part of the documentary process. When he is not in Cannes or Hollywood photographing celebrities, he circles the globe in search of meaningful portraits. He will present the work he produced in Japan immediately following the tsunami. He will also discuss the techniques he uses in order to create portraits with a medium format digital camera and the use of his mobile studio in reportage situations
